Jazz Apprentices

Blending the generations

Blending the various generations of jazz musicians is the best way to ensure this art form survives the test of time. Young players benefit from sharing the stage with experienced mentors, while veteran pros benefit from the fire and energy of these promising protégés. See below for schedule featuring five student musicians who have developed their craft well enough to appear with the festival's professional bands.

Organizations like the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society offer jazz education programs and Music Lesson Awards, all with the mission of preserving jazz music and encouraging its performance by a new generation of traditional jazz players. Some have formed their own bands and continue performing to new audiences. One example: check out the New Lowdown at this year's festival. They're a talented group of musicians who've benefitted from STJS Jazz Education programs, like Jazz Camp.
